IDRC celebrates 40 years of support to African agricultural research at the FARA 2010

19/07/2010, Ouagadougou, sub-Saharan Africa

The Ouagadougou 5th African Agriculture Science Week / FARA (July 19-24, 2010) constitutes a tremendous opportunity for Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to celebrate its 40th anniversary with African agricultural and environmental researchers it has greatly supported for the past 4 decades.

Therefore, IDRC is organizing within this framework on Tuesday, July 20th a side-event entitled “40 years of IDRC support to agricultural research in Africa: what prospects for the next decade?” tobe held in Room 5 of the Ouaga 2000 International Conference Centre.

This three-hour session will be a bilingual (French-English) panel discussion divided into two parts: the first one looking at was achieved in terms of support to agricultural research since 1970, why and how did IDRC follow these main trends in its work, and the second one looking at the future, presenting IDRC anticipated new focuses and introducing the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CISFRF).

This session will bring together senior African researchers from all over Africa, decision makers, media, representatives of producers’ groups, donors and development partners to analyze what was critical in IDRC’s support to African agricultural research so far before discussing the best way to implement together this new research agenda in the Sub-Saharan Africa context.
