Food security research improves lives of communities in Southeast Asia

Around the world, food insecurity affects an estimated 850 million people. Food security research supported by the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), is reducing poverty and improving livelihoods in rural communities in Cambodia, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. CIFSRF is a program of Canada's International Development Research Centre, undertaken with financial support from the Government of Canada, provided through Global Affairs Canada.

In Asia, Canadian and developing-country researchers have collaborated to:

• improve crops to increase agricultural biodiversity, farmers’ livelihoods, and yields
• increase access to land and resources to empower women and address gender inequality
• introduce aquaculture and postharvest technologies that allow farmers to access markets.
• increase use and production of small millets to promote better diets for women and children.
